Julia May was born to Thomas & Martha Wood, the eighth of eleven children. The family later moved to Putnam County, Missouri, and Julia married Louis May in that vicinity in the 1880s. The couple were raising 6 children in Missouri by the 1890s - Jessie, Luella, Elta, Charles, Otto and Fred. Otto passed away in 1893. Julia and her family moved to Des Moines, Iowa in about 1896 before the birth of their last child, Emma Nina, in 1899.

In about 1914, Julia, her husband and their youngest children Fred and Nina moved to Floyd County, Iowa, where Louis and Fred worked as farmhands in Riverton Township. The family later moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where Louis passed away in 1918. She was living with her son Fred in Waterloo at the time of censuses in 1920 and 1925. She passed away at the home of her daughter Elta in Greene, Iowa, and after services at the home she was returned to Waterloo for burial near her husband. She does not have a marker.
