He also bought some land across the river from Alton and called "LaMothe Place" this would be call West Alton. There are some LaMothe's buried in a cemetery over there. He started a hotel and other business over there.
Captain William LaMothe also saved the city of St. Louis from burning down. While he was out on the river he heard loud noise from another riverboat and when he looked he noticed that some of the riverboats were on fire, using his own boat he was able to pull them from the landing out to the middle of the river so they wouldn't catch other riverboat's on fire. He was honored for what he did and the underwriters gave him a silver service set for his heroism.
