Alma Faye "Abbie" Madden, age 82, of Amarillo, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Abbie was born in Midland, Texas, on October 30, 1929, to parents Clyde and Jessie Faye Cowden. She graduated from Midland Lee High School and received a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from The University of Texas. She married the love of her life, Wales Hendrix Madden, Jr. on November 8, 1952, whom she let climb many mountains and fell for all of his tales. For 60 years, they loved, laughed and embraced life together.
Abbie's love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and care for her family and friends was a light to everyone she met. Her outward beauty was only out shown by her sweet spirit, joyful nature, and loving heart. Abbie had a remarkable eye for art, a keen business instinct, and the ability to move easily between the two, particularly when managing her family's oil business. Abbie's numerous involvements and accomplishments only highlighted her gracious and generous way of caring for all who knew her, particularly the determined people of Amarillo who make it a better place to live. She served on several boards for The University of Texas and endowed a professorship in the college of liberal arts. She also endowed a scholarship at West Texas A&M University in visual arts. She was dedicated to the Panhandle region and devoted time and efforts to Amarillo College, and also served as the president of the Amarillo Junior League for four years. She danced in the Follies, and painted over 150 oil, charcoal, and watercolor paintings for friends and charities. Abbie's most treasured painting, "The Wedding Feast at Canaan" is currently displayed in the Great Hall of First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Wales, and their two children, Wales Madden III and his wife Nita and Tawney Macfarlan and her husband Dean. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Shawnee Hancock and husband Nick; Mac Macfarlan and his wife Sophie; Wales Madden IV and his wife Lauren; Brandy Thompson; Callie Nixon and her husband Ryan; Hamilton Madden; Cody Jennings; and by six great-grandchildren; and her dog, Tigiwon.
In memoriam, the family has suggested donations be made to the Downtown Women's Center of Amarillo, 409 S. Monroe St., Amarillo, TX 79101; Faith City Mission, 401 W. Second Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101-1511; or your favorite charity.
