George Washington Smith was born on January 17, 1832, his mother's name was Ann. He had brothers, John H. Smith, Thomas T. Smith, Benjamin Artemus Smith, Simpson Smith, Nathaniel Smith, and Jeremiah Smith.

He lived in Franklin County, Indiana when he met and married a local girl, Mary Ellen Cupp, in 1854. He was a union soldier of the Civil War having served in C Company 72nd Indiana Infantry Regiment.

Before 1870 George and Mary Ellen moved to Iroquois Co., Illinois with their family. While there in 1873 they had a set of quadruplets, all girls. All the girls lived until about their first birthday when two of them died with what is probably whooping cough. The other two lived to be adults.

George and Mary Ellen moved to Reno Co., Kansas in 1885. They had twelve children in all.

George W Smith, of Co. G, enrolled [68th IN] Jan. 4, 1864 in Laurel as a Private; mustered in Jan. 12, 1864 in Indianapolis at age 32. He was 6Œ 0.50 tall, light complexion, black eyes, and dark hair. Born Jan. 17, 1832 in Lafayette, IN, employed as a farmer, married to Mary Ellen Cupp, resident of Laurel, Franklin Co., IN. Mustered out at the end of the war Sep. 14, 1865 in Chattanooga, TN. Notes: A Private from 68th IN Co. C before consolidating into 44th IN Jun. 20, 1865. Sick in hospital in Madison, IN. Filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #236774 only listing 68th IN service. On 1860 Franklin Co., IN, 1870-1880 Iroquois Co., IL, and 1885-1910 Reno Co., KS censuses with Mary Ellen. Had 12 children, including a set of quadruplets, all girls.
