Elsie Roselyn Johnson, the daughter of Ruben and Frieda (Lockman) Evenson, was born August 3, 1923 at home in Barsness Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was baptized into the Methodist faith, and later confirmed at the East Zion Lutheran Church. Elsie grew up on the family farm and after attending country school, she went on to graduate from Starbuck High School in 1942. She worked at a grocery store in Glenwood and met Kenneth Johnson. They were married on August 8, 1944 at the East Zion Lutheran parsonage. They began farming in Rolling Forks Township where they built their lives and raised their family.
