The son of John Bader & Susan (Herrold) Potter, he married Anna Catherine "Annie" Bretz and fathered Susan Elizabeth (b. 10/11/51 - married David W. Hain), Wesley W. (b. 04/02/53), Samuel A. (b. 07/14/55), Margaret Moore (b. 03/31/57 - married an Armstrong), and Sarah Catherine (b. 01/15/59 [death certificate claims 1861] - married Allen Asper). In 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of forty-one in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 3 as a private with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He died at the reported age of 74-11-4, which calculates to a birth date of January 5, 1823. That agrees with his obituary in The News (Perry County), although November 15 is also reported. His middle initial is reported as "M," but his middle name is also reported as "Bader" (unconfirmed).
