SGT Donald Henry Pinkerton was the oldest child of four and second son of William Elmore J. and Lillian Laura (Silva) Pinkerton. His siblings were Ellen Grace, who died in infancy, Mary Anita (1920-1976) and William Fred (1922-2011).
He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps (USACC) on October 31, 1942 as a skilled Mechanic and Repairmen of motors, but was transferred to the United States Army Air Force (USAAF). After his basic training, he was stationed in Italy with the 12th Air Force, 487th Squadron, 340th Bomb Group (the famous "DOGFACE" Squadron of World War II) as a Gunner in 7K, a medium B-25 bomber. He was killed in action when 7K was hit over Mission Objective Perugia A/D (Aerodrome) target. SGT Pinkerton and the other five crewmen were unable to parachute out of the crippled, ill-fated B-25 aircraft before it exploded upon contact with the ground.
SGT Pinkerton's remains, as well as the remains of his fellow crewmen, were recovered and buried in the Community Cemetery in Ospedaliccho, Perugia, Perugia, Umbria, Italy. After the war front passed through, he and the other crewmen were taken to a temporary American cemettery at Castigion Fiorentino in Tuscany. Donald's parents made a decision to bring him home to California to his final resting place in Fort Jones, Siskiyou County.
Donald was a very skilled and talented motor mechanic and he brought these skills and talents to the Army Air Force when he enlisted in 1942. He was an inspiration to his family and friends, and his loss was sorely felt by all who knew him.
