Susan Brown was born in Hancock County, Ohio, October 16, 1834 and died near Bryan on September 3, 1895, aged 60 years, 10 months and 17 days. She was the oldest of 12 children, her mother dying when she was 18, leaving this large family, the youngest a baby of nine days old, she was left with virtually the responsibility of a mother in the management of the home. For four years she nobly perform that arduous duties of her position, when by the remarriage of her father she was relieved of the responsibility. She then went to live with her uncle and aunt in Richland County, Ohio and after some 17 years, she nursed each in the last sickness and followed them to the grave. And her ministry of love she was now called to the sickroom offer stepmother, and for two years proved inefficient nurse to her. Since then she has made her home with her brothers and sisters, and every place and position seeking to lighten the burdens of others. For the last 18 months of her life she was bedfast at the home of her brother, Eli Brown. She who had so long and so nobly cared for others, was now in turn as nobly cared for by Mr. Brown and his esteemed wife. Death, we trust, was a happy release to Susan, giving her admittance to that world where the inhabitant shall never say "I am sick." The funeral services were conducted by Rev. George Matthews September 5, after which many sympathizing friends followed the remains to our beautiful fountain Grove Cemetery. - Bryan Press, September 12, 1895.
