James was married to Elizabeth Connelly and had four children, Dennis, Bettymae, Richard and Charity. He lived his entire life in the Chicago area having grown up in Matteson and Olympia Fields and ultimately residing there at the time of his passing. He was employed by Sherwin Williams in Chicago for many tears until he opened a small coffee shop in 1952 at the 211th St IC train station.
