Mrs. Alice Arlene Williams Hodge, 86,
passed away at home in Charlottesville after a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Faye Williams; and by her beloved husband, David.
She is survived by her brother, Ralph Williams; two sons, John and Alan; and by Alan's wife, Arris. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Amanda, Eli, and Redmond.
Arlene was born the eldest child of Roger Judson Williams and Sena McGee Williams, who farmed and taught in Mountain Park, North Carolina. Watching her parents thrive as farmers during the depression years ingrained in her mind the utility of diligence and thrift. Watching their open-hearted and open-handed manner of living also taught her that diligence and thrift mean nothing without laughter, love, and generosity. It was during the years of the second World War that Arlene graduated as Valedictorian from the Mountain Park School, then entered Appalachian State University where she earned her Bachelor degree and teaching certificate. She enjoyed her years of teaching public school and eventually attended graduate school at the University of Tennesssee in Knoxville. There she met David Carroll Hodge, who would be her husband until his death this past winter.
A veteran finishing his Masters degree on the GI bill, David was serving coffee in the cafeteria line, and Arlene always remembered that as the year she drank far too much coffee. Arlene was raised in the Mountain Park Baptist Church, and married David there in June of 1952, after ferrying car loads of blooming Rhododendron to decorate the church that morning. Arlene held strong convictions of faith, and as she and David moved from Tennessee to Georgia and from Georgia to Virginia, one of their first priorities in each new town was to find and join the local Church of Christ. At the time of her death, Arlene had been a member of the Rugby Avenue Church of Christ in Charlottesville for 46 years. Arlene and David loved working outside together, and they turned each of their successive homes into a garden of trees and flowers. Amid their joy in growing things, in the tranquility of confirmed belief, and with a deep passion for unassuming daily life, Arlene and David raised their sons, and passed their quiet days. He preceded her in death by four months.
