May Elizabeth Hartman the daughter of Ethel Mary Shigley and Evertt William Figgins was born May 21, 1933 at Red Cloud Nebraska. She departed this life with family at her side on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Mary Lanning Memorial Haspital in Hastings Nebraska after a lenghty but bravely-faught battle with kidney disease. She was aged 77 years, 2 months and 21 days.
May grew up in the Red Coud community and received her formal education attending Red Cloud public schools. On July 23, 1949, at age 16 she was united in marriage with Kenneth Hartman at the presbyterian parsonage in Nelson, Nebraska. The made their home north of Red Cloud where they added four children to the family and farmed. In 1955, after losing their home to fire and enduring several years of drought, they moved to Greeley, Colorado where Kenneth worked as a herdsman on several northern Colorado dairies. In 1973, Kenneth and May purchased their own dariy operation North of Ft. Collins, Colorado. While in Colorado another daughter was born and three additional chilren were brought in to their family. They retired in 1994 and moved in to town. Then in 2006 they returned to Webster County making their home on Pleasant street in Guide Rock.
May was a loving and dedicated wife, mother , grandmother and friend. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, (especially roses) hummingbirds, fishing, puzzles, dolls, and many other items. She loved to cook bake and can goods. She will be lovingly remembered for her amazing hommemade krautburgers, bread, chicken and noodles, 'tarcas" and cinnamon rolls. She possessed an artistic talent and enjoyed embroidery, crocheting beautiful afgans and variety of crafts. She attended Timberline Church in FT. Collins and had taught Sunday School many years ago at other churches. May loved to volunteer. She volunteered at several food ministries in Colorado and Nebraska as well as then Denver Rescue Mission and their residental program in rural Larimer Couty, Co known as Harvest Farms. Their clothing ministry was affetionately named "Mom's Closet" in her honor. Mays generous and giving nature were a blessing to many.
Proceedin her in death were her parents, a son, Kenneth Hartman Jr., a sister Mary Masden, and an infant brother Chester Figgins.
Left to treasure her memory are her living husband of 61 years, Kenneth of Guide Rock NE, four daughters, Karen Nelson and husband Wayne of L'anse, MI, Kenda Peter and husband Arnold of Ft. Collins, CO, Lauri Mink and husband John of Kansas City , MO, and Alisa Gomez of Guide Rock NE, Three sons, David Hartman and wife Judy of Longmont, CO , Daniel Hewes-Hartman and wife Pam of Rio Vista, CA and Erick Walker of Sisseton SD,, 15 grandchildren , 9 great grandchildren and other relatives and many friends and neighbors.
