Pte Daniel Wade, along with 5 of his fellow soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb while patrolling the border of Helmand and Kandahar in their Warrior patrol vehicle. It appeared to be a old Soviet era mine used by the Taliban or IED, improvised explosive device.

The soldiers, who had only been in Afghanistan for a few weeks, were hit by a blast about 25 miles north of Helmand's capital, Lashkar Gah, at 6.30pm local time (2pm UK time) on Tuesday.Ammunition on board the Warrior ignited, causing a fierce fire to burn for many hours.

The intensity of the blaze meant rescuers could not get near the vehicle and its charred shell was not recovered to the main British base in Helmand, Camp Bastion, until the following day.

Father-to-be Private Daniel Wade, of 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, was just 20. Friends and family flocked to his family home to pay tribute yesterday.

At the end terrace in the Latchford area of Warrington relatives tied balloons and floral tributes to the garden fence.

A note with four roses from the young soldier's mum Lisa Billing read: "Daniel my baby boy, my hero. I will always love you and you have made me the proudest mum in the world.

"RIP son, you are with Nanna and your Dad now, my angels. Love mum x x."

Ms Billing and her daughter Stacey embraced as they read floral tributes outside the house.

Pte Wade was about to become a father with his fiancée Emma Hickman, 19, who is due to give birth in June.

Last night both Pte Wade's mum and fiancée cried as they stood next to his uncle Dave Hamilton and he said: "On Tuesday we were hit with the devastating news that our Daniel, our lovely, loving son, fiance, brother, nephew and friend was killed while on active service in Afghanistan. Like any other normal 20-year-old he was just finding his feet in life, building a future for himself and his fiancée Emma.

"Emma adored Dan, he was her life and will remain so, both in her heart and through the life of their first child expected in June.

"He was a typical, young, fun-loving lad who had his whole life ahead of him.

"He loved his family, and his mum Lisa and sister Stacey. Words cannot describe how utterly devastated we all feel at such a difficult time but we also cannot put into words how immensely proud of Daniel we all feel, not just as a soldier but as a man."

Private Wade and the five other soldiers had been on a security patrol in a Warrior armoured fighting vehicle when it was caught in an explosion in Kandahar province at dusk on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Zac Stenning, of 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, said of Pte Wade: "Private Daniel Wade had only recently joined the battalion, but in a very short period, he had made a real mark.

"It is to his great credit that he successfully completed his Warrior Driver course so early in his career. "

A Sunset Vigil

The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We've all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who's set to fly

The eulogy's read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO's done
What kind of soldier they'd become

The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name

A minute's silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
Deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack
