He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Sig Sartorius-Jones died at Forward Operating Base Khar Nikah in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. It is understood he died from a gunshot wound, not thought to be the the result of hostile action.
Aged 21, he was from Runcorn, Cheshire, and enlisted in February 2007. In 2008 he deployed to Iraq where he contributed to the provision of communications and the closure of Contingency Operating Base Basra. He was chosen to to serve with one of the Military Transition Teams providing communications and mentoring to the Iraqi forces. He took part in many exercises, including a three-month deployment to the British Army Training Unit Suffield in Canada and training exercises in Germany, Denmark and the UK. In Afghanistan, he deployed as a Rear Link Detachment Operator was responsible for the maintenance of vital communications links from FOB Khar Nikah in addition to conducting patrols. He was described as a knowledgeable, bright and dedicated soldier. Known as S-J, he was popular within the squadron, with his upbeat nature, sense of humour and passion for dance music. He was also a talented footballer and a former British national Tae Kwon Do champion.
Sig Sartorius-Jones leaves behind his wife Kellyanne and young son Dylan, his parents Robert and Amanda Sartorius-Jones, and brother Alan, along with other family and friends.
Funeral with full military honours was held on February 16, 2012 at St Michael's Church, Runcorn.
