Parish records in Trøgstad indicate Barney was christened with the name August Bernhard. He and his twin brother, Ove Marius, were the 2nd and 3rd children born to Anders Olsen (Dæhlin) and his 2nd wife, Ragnild Christiansdatter. This was a second marriage for both of his parents so he had many half siblings. He emigrated to the US in 1869, his twin died on the voyage over. Once the family settled in Polk County, Wisconsin, many of the family adopted the surname Hauge. August began using Bernhard Andersen and later was consistently known as Barney Anderson.

Barney married Mary Julia Hansen 21 Oct 1896 in Hennepin County, MN and they had four children.

Barney was killed when he accidentally drove his car off a pier in St. Petersburg and into the ocean.
