I grew up with the program he started. He was a father figure, mentor, and friend. He displayed class and professionalism and surrounded himself with a hardworking staff both coaching and administrative that displayed those same core values.I was blessed to play in the original UAB Blazer Basketball Pep band through his glory years and the experience was PRICELESS. I remember chatting with his wife Ruth on the way to Hofheinz Pavillion in Houston,Texas in 1985.Found out she was a saxophone player herself! In the second round game we drew Memphis State and it was amazing to see their fans literally beg out loud for him to "come home" and we all laughed and wondered what then Coach Dana Kirk was thinking and how he felt about that display from the Memphis State fanbase that day. Gene cared,he always cared and I could write volumes about the UAB experiences we all shared. The half has not been told! I did disagree with his choice of Watson Brown as the program's first D-1 coach.Gene got the last laugh on me there as Watson's team spoiled Nick Saban's SEC debut at their newly expanded Tiger Stadium on homecoming night in Baton Rouge. I think it is a real shame to seehis program being attacked by the UofA board of trustees and I'm fighting and hoping that we will overcome those who are trying to destroy UAB athletics and the Bartow family legacy! ONE THING THEY WILL NEVER DESTROY IS THE COLD HARD FACT THE GENE BARTOW IS THE ONLY COACH TO EVER GO 3-O IN TUSCALOOSA AND I WAS A WITNESS TO IT! THANKS GENE,I LOVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND OUR BLAZERS! #FreeUAB

Despite being a very successful basketball coach, you stayed very grounded. You were a Hall of Fame coach, yet one of the most humble men a person could meet. If the world was filled with more Gene Bartows, this world would be a much better place. Unfortunately, there will never be another like you. RIP Coach Bartow.
