Washington, Ella Moore Bassett. Diary, 1864..Library of Va.Accession 24137. 13 leaves. Photostats (negative).DIARY, 27 May-13 June 1864, of Ella Moore Bassett Washington (1834-1898) of Hanover County, Virginia, and Jefferson County, (West) Virginia, describing the Union army's occupation of that part of Hanover County which included the Bassett family home, "Clover Lea", and detailing its social and economic effects. She records how Union troops foraged for food, often taking the livestock and supplies from the Bassett home and how General George A. Custer assissted in protecting Clover Lea from those foragers. She describes the family's visits with Custer and the over night stay of General William F. Smith. Washington also comments on the battle of Cold Harbor. The original diary is located at the Historical Society of York County, Pennsylvania. A transcript of the diary is available in volume 16, issue 10 of the Civil War Times Illustrated magazine.
