Marion is the son of Amos Ritter Shoulders and Scynthia Bise Shoulders. He married Mary Catherine Prince on December 25, 1898 in Braxton County, West Virginia. They had nine children: Joseph, Nancy, Scynthia, Marion, Bessie, John, Georgia, Arthur, and Ina. He married Dora Flossie Sloan Hagy, who had been his housekeeper after the death of Mary. They had three children: Martella, Dora, and Delena. Marion was a coal loader in a coal mine and was in an accident which caused his death.
