U.S. Senator. While working as a printer and engraver, he studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Ravenna, Ohio in 1799. He was a member of the Ohio State Senate (1803-05) and served as a Major in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. After the war, he was judge of the fifth Ohio Circuit Court of Common Pleas (1816-23), and United States district judge of Ohio in 1833. In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1845. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
