Augustus was born to Newton Francis Austin Sr and Sarah Jane Wilcox. He was known as Gus. He had eight siblings: Newton Francis Jr., Martha Quina, Thodore Hugh, James Boyd, Leon Bernard, John McAslin, David Dewitt, and Paul Leroy. Gus married Lola Lavinia Talbot on 18 May 1898 in Salt Lake City. She died giving birth to their son, Lowell in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. He later married Emily Robinson on 30 October 1900 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had five children: William Robinson, Portia, Nita, Quina, and Bernice. Gus died in Salt Lake City, Utah and is buried there.
