Son of David Spurlock of Virginia, Bennett and his wife, Lydia Finch moved to Illinios in the pioneer years with his mother, Hannah Flowers Spurlock. They lost all three sons in the Civil War: Bennett Jr, Asa and Humphrey.
Bennett Sr. and his brother had a real estate company and helped found the town of Albany IL.
