U.S. Congressman. After graduating from South Carolina College in 1850, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852, and began to practice law in Sumter, South Carolina. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain Adjutant Officer of the 23rd Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Confederate Army. After the war, he entered politics and was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives (1865 to 1867). In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh U.S. Congresses, serving until 1883. After leaving office, he served as Master-in-Equity Judge for Sumter County, South Carolina (1884 to 1893).
