U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1829 and moved to Washington, Alabama, where he commenced the practice of law. He was justice of the peace in Montgomery in 1833, moved to Mobile in 1841, was the Mobile district judge of the circuit court, (1841-42), served in the Alabama State Senate in 1844 and Mayor of Mobile in 1844. In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. Not seeking reelection, he was an associate justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court in 1847 and in was chief justice, (1849-52). During the Civil War, he was a member of the first Confederate House of Representatives, (1862-64). After the war, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 74.
