Friedrich (later Frederick) Kerth was born in Illischestie, Bukovina, Austria on April 30, 1895. He was one of fourteen children born to Johan Bernhard Kerth and Eva Armbruester. Fred settled in Kansas when he arrived in the US, and later served as a BM 2 in the US Navy during World War I. On August 2, 1921 he married Bertha Caroline Aust. Together they had three children: Roy, Robert, and Lenora. Fred died in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 20, 1971.
