Age 70, died Sunday evening at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital following a three week illness. He was born December 27, 1905 in Watertown, Wisconsin. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1923 and Beloit College in 1929. He received his masters degree in Education in 1940 from Marquette University. Mr. Melzer taught at Mayville High School and moved to Sheboygan in 1931. He taught at Sheboygan High School, Central High and South High Schools from 1931 until his retirement in 1971. Prior to his retirement he taught Social Studies for 40 years and during that time he took the South High Debate Team to ten state titles, he was known as "Mr. Debate". He married Lorene Brackin of Fairmont, North Dakota, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, December 27, 1931. Mr. Melzer was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC, and formerly served as a deacon in the church. Survivors include his wife, two sons William, Appleton, and Attny Robert, Elkhart Lake, a brother, Kurt, Whitefish Bay, and two grandsons. the funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. George Schowalter officiating. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Sheboygan. Friends may call at the Ballhorn Funeral Chapels from 5:30 until 8:30 Tuesday and at the church from 9 until 11 a.m. Wednesday. A memorial scholership fund has been established in Melzer's name at the Security First National Bank of Sheboygan, for the outstanding forensics student at South High School.
