Nina "Mardel" lived in San Francisco for 25 years before moving to Fresno, California in 1948 to be closer to her business, Home Creek Resort at Huntington Lake. She was known as Mardel throughout most of her life but preferred Nina in her senior years.

In San Francisco she graduated high school from Mrs. Kate Wilkins Private School in 1925 at the age of 16. Photographer Ansel Adams received a grammar school diploma from Mrs. Wilkins school in 1917. She enjoyed dressage riding in Golden Gate Park. Both her home and school were close to the park.

She belonged to the The Progressive Business Girls Club, and the Park Presidio Dramatic Club.

She taught dance, mostly tap and ballroom, and met her first husband, Richard George Lutz when as she put it, "was trying to teach him to dance." She loved Christmas so much that she had Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" played at her wedding in December 1942 instead of the traditional Wedding March from Felix Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Nights Dream".

In 1946 her family went in to the resort business. Nina Mardel and her husband Richard Lutz joined her mother Carrie Ratliff and her brother Frank Jerry Ratliff in a partnership to purchase Home Creek Resort at Huntington Lake, California. After a divorce in 1947 and the passing of her mother Carrie in 1949, Nina Mardel and brother Frank Jerry Ratliff were left as equal partners in the enterprise. Her second husband, Robert "Paul" Womer was an employee of the resort.

In 1962 she moved back to Redwood City in the San Francisco Bay Area because the air quality in Fresno was causing her to have severe asthma attacks. She became a member of the First Baptist Church in San Carlos, California where her memorial service was held after passing .

In October of 1984 she had quadruple bypass surgery that was at first thought to be successful but she succumbed to complications from that surgery on February 12, 1985 at Mills Hospital in San Mateo, California

She is a direct line descendant of Abraham Lincoln's friend and mentor Judge Bowling Greene(1786-1742). See photo of the certificate.

Her ashes were spread in the Redwoods near
GPS 37°25'54.8"N 122°19'02.4" W and there is another Redwood Tree dedicated to her in Castle Rock State Park, Los Gatos, California. See photo page.
