Following service with the US Navy during World War II, he attended the University of Redlands and while a graduate student, he studied overseas at the University of Stockholm. During this period, he landed a part-time job with CBS and advanced to foreign correspondent, achieving recognition for his diligent reporting during the Korean War. Upon his return to the US, Peirpoint initiated his TV career during the era of television's infancy, as he began an association with Edward R. Murrow, appearing on the first episode of his series "See It Now" in 1951, and becoming a member of what was known as "Murrow's Boys". This led to his hosting of the TV documentary series "Eyewitness to History" (1960). In 1957 (during the Eisenhower administration), he began what is perhaps his most identifiable role, as White House correspondent, a post he retained until 1981. Pierpoint often spoke of the Kennedy years as the high point of his career and following the president's assassination in 1963 (in which he covered the tragic event in Dallas), in the passing years he reflected on that day in melancholy emotion. He was a frequent contributor to Walter Cronkite's newscasts and earned an Emmy Award for his coverage of Vice President Spiro Agnew's resignation in 1973, following up with his reporting of the Watergate scandal. In 1981, he authored his memoir "At the White House" and received a second Emmy Award for his efforts on a piece regarding a banking scandal in 1989, prior to retirement in 1990.
