He died July 23, 1923 at Colfax, Dunn Co., Wis. aged 80 years, 3 months and 28 days and was buried in the Bloomer Cemetery at Bloomer. His military style gravestone is inscribed "Sergt. Isaac N. Salisbury Co. K 37 Wis Inf." Another gravestone in the family plot is inscribed "I. Newton Salisbury 1843 – 1923."

Isaac was a Civil War veteran having served as a Sergeant in Company K, 37th Wisconsin Infantry. He enlisted March 29, 1864 at Eagle, Wisconsin, to serve three years as Private in Company K of the 37th Wisconsin Infantry. On June 16, 1864 he was mustered into Federal Service with Company K at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received $60.00 of his $300.00 enlistment bounty, a $12.00 premium and was listed as a 20 years old, 5'9" tall farmer with brown hair, gray eyes and a dark complexion born in New York. His residence at that time was Little Prairie, Walworth County, Wisconsin.
On July 30, 1864, Isaac was wounded severely in the left hand during the battle for Petersburg, Virginia. On August 3, 1864 he was admitted to Hospital Number 3133 for treatment of his wounds. At that time it was noted in the hospital records that he was 20 years of age and his residence was at Eagle, Post Office, Waukasha County, Wisconsin. His next of kin was listed as Doct B. Salisbury at the same location.
On October 11, 1864 Isaac was discharged under a surgeon's Certificate Of Disability at Campbell U.S. General Hospital at Washington, D.C. The examining surgeon found him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of "Amputation of index & little finger and loss of use of Middle finger of left hand from gunshot wound received July 30, 1864 at Battle near Petersburg, Virginia. He is unfit for the 1st Battalion Veteran Reserve Corps. Disability total."

In 1877 he moved to Brookings, Brookings County, South Dakota, where he received for five years. In 1882 he moved to Hitchcock, Beadle County, South Dakota, where he resided for thirteen years. In 1895 he moved to Cook's Valley near Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, where he resided for seventeen years. In 1912 he moved to Colfax, Dunn County, Wisconsin, where he lived out the rest of his days.
