Obit in Ft Madison New Paper: Applegate at the home of Ernest Engeman, near Viela, in Jefferson Township, Lee County, Iowa , Monday, October 18, 1909, John Applegate of old age, aged 85 years, 8 months, 18 days. Deceased was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, and at the age of sixteen came with his parents to Iowa, in 1835 experiencing all the pactical realities of pioneer life. In the year 1846 on March 25, he was married to Miss Dorothy Honadel. They went to housekeeping in the good old pioneer way on his farm on Sugar Creek, where the spent many happy and properous years until the infirmition of old age made it necessary for them to be cared for by kind and loving relatives. They celibrated their golden wedding in 1897. No children blessed their home, Aunt Dolly, as she was familiarly known, passed over to the other side one year ago. For a number of years Mr. Applegate was entirely blind. Funeral was held Wednesday, October 20, 1909, service conducted by Rev. A.C. Snavely: interment in Everhart Cemetery.
