Solon was the eldest son out of six children and when his father passed away, he was 13years old, he quit school and went to work to help support the family. He worked in various jobs at the Virginia Transit Company. He was also Director of the YMCA.
He married Gladys and they had two children, Margaret and Kenneth.
He died at the age of 78 in Norfolk, Virginia.
