Graduated from William and Mary College in 1876,he became principal of Gloucester High School,holding that position until 1881,when he became a member of the faculty of Bel Air Academy in Harford County,Maryland.In 1892 he became associated with the Maryland Agricultural College(now University of Maryland)as professor of agriculture.
He also served as editor of the Harford Democrat.
He married Emily Johnson of College Park in 1896.
