Poet. With Andre Breton and others he founded the French Surrealist movement in 1924. His favorite subject was love in all its forms, which he wrote about with carefully controlled dream imagery and a complete lack of sentimentality. His books include "The Capital of Pain" (1926), "Love and Poetry" (1929), "The Immediate Life" (1932), and "Poetry and Reality" (1942). Eluard was born in Saint-Denis, France. He was a friend of composer Francis Poulenc, who set many of his poems to music. His "Complete Works" were published in two volumes in 1968.
