His favorite subject was love in all its forms, which he wrote about with carefully controlled dream imagery and a complete lack of sentimentality. His books include "The Capital of Pain" (1926), "Love and Poetry" (1929), "The Immediate Life" (1932), and "Poetry and Reality" (1942). Eluard was born in Saint-Denis, France. He was a friend of composer Francis Poulenc, who set many of his poems to music. His "Complete Works" were published in two volumes in 1968.
