Son of Col. Wm HH Taylor of Virginia and Anna T.H. Harrison, the daughter of President William Henry Harrison. Besides being the grandson of the 9th President, John T. Taylor is the great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison, signer of the Declaration of Independence. In the Civil War Capt. Taylor served in Co. G, Fifth Ohio Calvary, and subsequently elected first lieutenant. He was appointed Aide-De-Camp to Gen. W.T. Sherman and at one point when the General's horse was shot out from under him, Capt. Taylor bravely gave up his own mount to him. He was at the battle of Shiloh and severely injured at Vicksburg. He was discharged May 1865 and in 1866 moved to Kansas. He was the longest serving Chief of Police of Leavenworth, KS serving from 1903-1913.
