An officer in the Marines during World War II, he became the CEO of the giant brokerage firm Merrill Lynch before accepting the post of Treasury secretary in 1981. Then, in a famous job switch, he swapped places with James A. Baker III to become Reagan's chief of staff in 1985. He was forced to resign in 1987 because of the Iran-Contra scandal. The following year he published a tell-all biography in which he revealed that first lady Nancy Reagan regularly consulted an astrologer. He died of cancer in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he had a retirement home.
