He was the son of Rem and Petronella (Van Wicklin) Hegeman. He was baptised in the New Utrecht Church. He inherited by the will of his father the old homestead plantation on Flatbush Avenue adjoining the lands of Abraham Hegeman in what would later become the Prospect Leffert Gardens section of Brooklyn. His father Rem got this plantation from his father Joseph in 1715, the year of his marriage. The plantation deed was in consideration of 400 pounds.
