J. B. COX, EX-STILWELL POSTMASTER, DIES AT 77
Services for James Burl Cox, 77, former postmaster of Stilwell who died Thursday of last week in the Tahlequah City Hospital, were held Saturday in the Reed-Culver Funeral Chapel in Tahlequah.
The Rev. Glen Miller of the First United Methodist Church of Tahlequah officiated. Interment was in the Stilwell City Cemetery.
Cox, born Sept. 9, 1896, in Evansville, Ark., served as postmaster of Stilwell from 1927 to 1939. He moved to Tahlequah in 1941.
FORMER TEACHER
Before being named Stilwell postmaster, Cox served as a teacher in Adair County rural schools, and later was principal of Stilwell Elementary Schools.
He served as postmaster in Tahlequah from 1955 to 1969, and formerly operated and owned the J. R. Cox Clothing Co. in Tahlequah.
An Army veteran of World War One, Cox was post commander and county commander of the American Legion in Stilwell. A member of Cherokee Masonic Lodge 10 here, he received his 50-yard Mason pin last year. He was a former worshipful master of the Masonic Lodge at Stilwell.
CHAMBER PRESIDENT
Cox had served as president of the Tahlequah Chamber of Commerce two years and was a member of the Tahlequah Kiwanis Club for many years. He is listed in Who's Who in American Politics and was considered an authority on local history.
Cox is survived by his wife, Reba of the home; a son, James R. (Jim) Cox, of Denver, Colo.; three grand children; two brothers, Andrew of Ada and Burnell Parsons of Baxter Springs, Kan.; and a sister, Hazel Cox of Aberdeen Wash.
