US Congressman, San Francisco Mayor. Elected to represent California's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1949 to 1964. Also served as a Member of the California State Senate from 1939 to 1947, Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from California in 1940, 1944, 1948, and 1956 as Delegate, and 1952 as Alternate, Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of California in 1946, and Mayor of San Francisco, California, from 1964 to 1968.
