In Feb. 1876 a fire broke out in the chimney of their house and the whole house went up in flames. Nothing was saved but the clothes on their backs and the blankets they were wrapped in.
Hyrum was 5 years old at the time.
He said" The wind beat against our little faces and blew the snow so that all could see was the flames from the house burning.I never saw father when he reached the burning building. he battled the fire and tried to save the house but it was to late. Among the ruins was a trunk that mother had brought from Wales, containing all her prised possessions."
They found shelter at Kristinas home and the neighbors. All the neighbors helped out within days.

Shortly after moving to Liberty, Mary took her 4 children to Providence to visit relatives.
Hyrum recalls" We had a pretty hard ,bumpy ride through the canyon. But we made it to Franklin in a day. A good long day!!
We stopped for the night with some relatives and it took another day to get to Providence. We kids were tired, but it was a lot of fun."
