Helen E. Atherton, 83, of 9936 Reeder Road, Mercersburg, died unexpectedly at 1:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, in the emergency room of Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.

Born Nov. 19, 1914, near Claylick, she was a daughter of the late Amos and Clarabelle Robinson Harnish.

She was a member of Kasiesville Bible Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.

During World War II, she worked at the former Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown. Later, she worked at Mercersburg Dress Factory, and she had been a housekeeper in the Mercersburg area.

She enjoyed gardening.

John H. Atherton, her husband, died Dec. 1, 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Connie (Mrs. William) Hornbaker of Mercersburg and Kay (Mrs. J. Rodney) Funk of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; two step granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and a sister and a brother, Leona Pfoutz and George C. Harnish, both of Mercersburg. A sister and two brothers also preceded her in death.

Burial will be Thursday in Meyers Cemetery, Mercersburg.
