Anna Marie (Bognanno) Ahrens was gathered by the angels she so longed to see and escorted to her heavenly home on June 19, 2011, five days before her 92nd birthday. She was living at Emerald Hills Adult Family Home in Edmonds, WA, near her daughter, Jacqueline. Ann was born June 24, 1919, in Centerville, IA, to Italian immigrant parents, Mario and Maria (Bellomo) Bognanno from Sicily, and was one of six siblings. She was raised and educated in Des Moines, IA, where she attended Broadlawns Hospital School of Nursing and received her RN degree in 1941. On February 8, 1942, Ann married Milo Ahrens, who, shortly after their marriage, joined the Coast Guard to serve in World War II. By the end of the War, they had two daughters, Jacqueline and Marilyn. Three years later a son, Kenneth, was born, and then five years later, they were all thrilled with the birth of a little baby sister, Christine. The family lived in Des Moines, where Ann stayed home with the children and Milo worked for the telephone company, until 1953, when they left their large families behind for a new adventure and moved to Yuma, AZ. There, Ann began again working in the nursing field and Milo continued with the telephone company. Two years later, Milo won a Veteran's drawing to buy a homestead farm in the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project and they moved to Quincy, WA. Ann continued her nursing work in nearby hospitals, and then became steadily employed at the Quincy Valley Medical Clinic for many years. She became a special nurse to many families and gained a reputation for giving the best shots. In 1969, Milo and Ann moved to Cashmere, WA, where they purchased a pear and apple orchard. She then went to work at the Cashmere Medical Clinic until her retirement, and followed retirement with volunteer work at the Cashmere Convalescent Center. Ann was a wonderful Italian cook. She enjoyed canning the orchard's produce. She sewed beautifully and loved crafts, gardening and traveling. She entertained us with a great repertoire of jokes, dramatic story telling, and harmonizing with her lovely alto voice. She loved her family and was a tremendous support and help to them, as well as to many friends. Ann reached out to people in need and shared her home with them. She gave up things for herself so she could give to others. She loved the Lord, served her church, and was a woman of prayer. She leaves a legacy of hard work, service, sacrifice and faith.
