U.S. Congressman, Massachusetts Governor. In 1920, he opened the Packard Motor Car Company in Boston, one of the first automobile dealerships in Massachusetts, which made him one of the state's wealthiest men. Entering politics, he was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1915 and was elected as an Independent Republican to the Sixty-fifth Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Sixty-sixth Congress, serving (1917-21). After his term, he was Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, (1921-24) and elected as a Republican the 50th Governor of Massachusetts, (1924-29). During his tenure, a budget deficit was reduced, state agencies were restructured and the controversial Sacco and Vanezzeti murder case was dealt with. After leaving office, he returned to his automotive business, serving as chairman of the board of the Cadillac-Oldsmobile Company, until 1949. He died in retirement at age 80.
