Oma Thedford Greer was born on March 18, 1907, and passed away on June 9, 2011.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clark Thedford and Blanche Murphy Thedford; husband, John Alvin Greer; grandsons, Teddy and Jon-Paul Aguilar; son-in-law, James Rudolph Cook, sisters Hazel Shelton, Pansy Hlas and Lottie Perry. She is survived by her only daughter, Bernice Cook of Harlingen; granddaughters, Patsy Cook of Chandler and Brenda Cook Cialone of Houston and Brenda's husband Joe Cialone; and great-grandsons, Joseph and John Cialone, all of Houston; and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sister, Jackie Eaker, Hampton, Va., and loving nieces, nephews and their families.
She was married to John Alvin Greer from 1925, when he was 17 and she was 18 years, until his death on Oct. 26, 1994 - 69 happy years.
She and Alvin attended Martin Springs Baptist Church where they taught Sunday school and vacation bible school for many years.
Oma and Alvin cared for and loved many foster children over the years.
Oma spent her life in the Martin Springs area. She collected dolls and loved to sew, in later years making fine clothes for her collection of abandoned dolls. She was a great cook, particularly of chocolate pies. No one ever left Oma's home hungry.
She was an acclaimed letter writer, but friends and relatives cringed when an envelope, decorated in stickers of animals or flowers, arrived. If the envelope was tightly sealed with scotch tape, it was a lecture on something intended only for the recipient.
At 103 years of age, she fired off a letter to the Tyler Morning Telegraph because she did not approve of the treatment of her beloved Skeezix in Gasoline Alley. The letter was published.
She had many friends. Upon the 100th birthday, she produced an invitation list of about 100 of her closest relatives and friends. It was a grand birthday luncheon in the Chandler Community Center, enjoyed by all.
She and Alvin camped and fished with her daughter and granddaughters through the years. She worked crossword puzzles with visiting family members. She played checkers with her great-grandsons (cheating when necessary).
Her daughter, granddaughters and their families were present for most holidays and around the Greer tree every Christmas. She spent the year collecting items for the grandsons' Christmas stockings - a nylon stocking that was stuffed with toys, food, gags, fishing lures and gear and other surprises, until it was 6 feet long.
She lived the last several years in the care of her dear granddaughter, Patsy Cook, with regular visits from her beloved daughter and granddaughter.
Family visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and service will be Monday at 10 a.m., both at Burks Walker Funeral Home in Tyler. Burial will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joseph, John and Joe Cialone, Jack Grier, Jimmy Coleson and Ted Aguilar.
Honorary pallbearers will be nieces, Patsy Enas, Barbara Hull, Linda Alexander and Charlotte Morris.
