He was born in Massachusetts, a son of the late Eliab and Rebecca Sackett Dewey. He attended Westfield Acadamy and entered Williams College in Sept. 1850; graduated as one of the "honor men" in 1854. His marriage to Eliza Jane EELLS of Simsbury, CT took place on May 10, 1855.
James became Principal of Chester Academy, Vermont in 1855; was at Springfield, MA English and Classical Institute, 1856 - 1859; admitted to Hampdon County Bar in 1859; went to Chicago in 1860, where he became a teacher of Greek, Latin, geology, and astronomy at West Division High School. While teaching, James studied medicine and graduated from Chicago Homeopathic Medical College in 1888. He retired as a physician. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eliza Jane Eells Dewey; a daughter, Gracie Ella Rosetta Dewey, who died at age 5 years; a daughter, Dr. Carolyn "Carrie" Dewey Beebe, sons James R. Dewey, Jr and Charles E. Dewey, and by his second wife, Grace Stemmons Hickman Dewey.
Dr. Dewey was survived by his son, Dr. Elbert E. Dewey. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery on February 2, 1917.
