Martha "Martie" Elaine Carlson was born August 14, 1940 in Douglas, Wyoming; the daughter of Irving and Margaret Carlson. She attended schools in Douglas and graduated from the University of Wyoming with an education degree in 1961. She was a member of the Spurs and Chimes honor societies and president of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and an active alumnae. She taught in the Douglas and Converse County schools for several years.

On August 27, 1961 she was joined in marriage with George Akers. One dauighter, Anita, 15, and one son, C. T., 12, were born of this union. They have made their home on a ranch outside of Douglas.

Mrs. Akers was extremely active in community and youth activities. She helped start the church's Sunday School program. She also held offices and was involved with P.E.O., Cowbelles, Panhellenic, Douglas Sorority, 4-H and Katzenjammer Bridge Club. She had a Majority Degree in Job's Daughters and was a charter member of the Douglas High School National Honor Society. She was also an avid supporter of the Douglas Booster Club and many other youth activities.

Survivors included her husband, George; one daughter, Anita; one son C.T.; her parents, Margaret and Irving Carlson; aunts and uncles, Martha Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Newt Fackler and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Fackler; her in-laws, Arch and June Akers, Ron and Peggy Darling; one niece, Tara Jo Darling; and several cousins.
