The 22nd Cavalry was at Greenland Gap, West Virginia on 25 February 1864 when Francis was hit and killed by a falling tree during an ambush at age 22.
His body was sent home to be interred. The entry in his family's Bible says: "Francis Moore Boles Departed this Life Feb. Twenty-fifth A.D. 1864.-At Greenland Gap, West Va. in the service of his country. - In peace, Children bury their Parents; In war, Parents bury their Children."
Jacob and Rachel outlived their son by nearly 30 years.
