CLENDINNING, DOROTHY (PIERCE) 87 - of Ventnor, passed away May 1, 2011 at Mainland Manor Nursing Home surrounded by her family.

She was born in 1923 in Atlantic City and was a lifelong area resident. Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband, Jack, her parents Kennard and Jennie Pierce and her sister Helen Pierce. Dorothy grew up in Atlantic City and attended Atlantic City High School graduating in 1941. After graduation, she worked as a volunteer at England General Hospital during World War II. She also worked at Atlantic City Electric where she met her husband Jack. Together they raised three daughters in Ventnor in the same house she resided until her stay at Mainland Manor. Dorothy was a former hostess for the Miss America Pageant Committee and worked part time for Brick Lumber Company while raising her family. She loved her family and her home in Ventnor and enjoyed the friendship of all her neighbors. She was known as the key keeper on her street for all the out of town neighbors. Before her eyesight failed, she loved to read and did beautiful needlepoint. Considered works of art, they will be forever cherished by her family. Her four grandchildren were her pride and joy and she spent much of her time with them while they were growing up.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Louise Herriott (Jerry) of Northfield, Linda Clement (John) of Linwood, and Mary Jane Hurley (Jay) of Northfield. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael Clement (Christine) of Collegeville, PA, Nick Clement of Manyunk, PA, Thomas Hurley of New York City, NY and Katie Hurley of Northfield; one great grandchild, Hailey Grace Clement; and her cousin Suzanne Little of Bargaintown.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10am on Wednesday, May 4th at Holy Trinity Parish-St. James Church, Ventnor where friends may call beginning at 9am. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Pleasantville. Contributions in her memory may be made to Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Fund, c/o 10 Lesley Lane, Northfield, NJ 08225. Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home.
