Thomas the son of Lawrence W. Ames of Waterville NY and Mary A. Ames of Oriskany Falls NY enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 8, 1964 in Albany NY. He was assigned for duty with Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV FMF.

Enroute to their destination while in the South China Sea,on board the LPH-2 USS Iwo Jima, PFC Ames became ill and died of spinal meningitis near the coast of Vietnam prior to the Marines landing in Qui Nhon, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam. He thus became the first Marine of Seventh Regiment to die on its way to combat in Southeast Asia.
