Philanthropist. Co-founder of Rotary International. He established a successful career as a mining engineer with an office in the Unity Building in the Chicago Loop. On February 23, 1905, he hosted a meeting with three friends in his office. They were Paul P. Harris, an attorney; Sylvester Schiele, a coal dealer; and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Harris presented the idea of a social service organization of business leaders. The three other men shared Harris' enthusiasm for the idea and they agreed to meet two weeks later and to bring other friends. This gathering is said to be the first meeting of the Rotary Club. Before the demolition of the Unity Building in 1989, Rotarians removed all the fixtures from Loehr's office and placed them in storage. The office was later reconstructed on the sixteenth floor of Rotary International headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, where it remains today as a memorial to the first Rotary meeting.
