Following in the footsteps of the Smith family J. Edward Smith (The Smith family went by their middle names) studied medicine in New York City and was granted a license in 1838 to practice "medicine and surgical art" in Nyack, N.Y. He often acquired and sent requested supplies for his brother, James William Smith, medical missionary to Hawaii.
John married Emaline Sneden Oct. 15, 1836 in Tappan, Rockland County, New York. They had two children, Juliette Augusta Smith and Francis Durando Smith.
