Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company K, 37th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his combined bravery at the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia on May 30 and 31, 1862, and at Big Shanty, Georgia on June 14 and 15, 1864. His citation reads "At Williamsburg, Va., assisted in driving rebel skirmishers to their main line. Participated in action, at Fair Oaks, Va., though excused from duty because of disability. In a charge with his company at Big Shanty, Ga., was the first man on the enemy's works". His Medal was awarded to him on February 13, 1891, 26 years after the end of the War.
