Mister Marshall, you had a very productive life on this planet. In your home state of Indiana, you established yourself as a fine Attorney, and at the age of 54 won your first elective office as Governor of Indiana. While you were serving your second term, you became Wilson's running mate in 1912, and subsequently served two terms as Vice President. It must not have been easy serving under that man Wilson, who according to some sources referred to you as a "small caliber man". Your boss was wrong to have such a negative appraisal of your abilities. I consider it a pity that you did not receive the nomination of your party in 1920. And had the extent of Wilson's illness become public knowledge in 1919, you probably would have been urged to serve as acting President at the very least. Unfortunately, at that time the law was not clear about handling a sitting President who was disabled, and Wilson was clearly unfit to continue serving. And your quip about the cigar during a boring speech that was being delivered by a long-winded Senator while you were presiding over the Senate was absolutely priceless! Sir, you were a very capable man who was truly underestimated. Had you drawn more attention to yourself and really possessed the inclination, I believe you might have been nominated in 1920 and given that man Harding a run for his money. Rest easy, and thanks for your faithful service to our Republic.

My gr-gr-gr grandfather was a cousin of yours, Mr. Marshall. His name was also Thomas Riley Marshall, but his ancestors went from Virginia to North Carolina, and yours went from Virginia to Indiana. Rest in eternal peace, dear distant cousin.

Rest in peace, Mr. Vice President. You wanted a good five-cent cigar? Though history records that you apparently said it out of boredom during a Senate session, I'll go you one better...this one is absolutely free!
(From a non-smoker, actually.)
